Welcome to the Antipodes. For lots of people, there's nothing wrong with this picture. But after 14 hours in the air and a 6:00 AM arrival, it was a bit challenging to navigate Sydney rush hour, on the other side of the road.
Ralph took a triple take before he dared to cross this street.
After weeks, months, years of planning, I'm thrilled to be here, nearly forgetting how tired I am from the trip over. Many years ago, when I was working with a film company in Sydney, I got a bad toothache and after a few days of suffering went to a dentist in Glebe. Although I was hurting badly and felt quite dazed, I took a mental note to come back to this neighborhood: it's relaxed and funky, close to the university, with great views of the cityscape. And here we are, waiting for our rooms to get ready, the dental praxis from way back when just down the road.
Plenty of kids in school uniforms are waiting for the bus, almost all of them have an iPod plugged into their ears. The other, slightly older people in the street run around with a Bluetooth headphone, everyone wired up and in their own little bubble of noise.
